Five Tips to Save on Moving Expenses

Moving can rack up hundreds, even thousands, of dollars in expenses. However, a little planning can go a long way toward keeping your costs under control. Here are some tips to help you think outside of the (moving) box.

Moving Expenses

Give Yourself Time to Plan

Budgeting your costs well in advance of the move will give you time to search for the best rates on moving companies. You’re also more likely to avoid unexpected expenses that often accompany last-minute planning. Waiting to research costs and find packing materials limits your options, so you’ll likely have to pay extra.

Use It or Lose It

The more stuff you have to move, the more expensive it’ll be to move it. You can donate or sell unused items like clothes, furniture and appliances. It’s also a good time to throw away junk you’ve accumulated too. Don’t forget to go through your kitchen and cook food that can be eaten or donate non-perishable items.

Save Money on Packing Materials

Look through your inventory before you spend big bucks on packing materials and boxes. You can use Amazon boxes, TV boxes and suitcases to pack your belongings. Towels, bedsheets and blankets are great for protecting breakable items.

You’ll find cheaper packing materials online. People may offer free boxes on Craigslist, Letgo and Nextdoor, so do your research to avoid buying them. You can also find reasonably priced moving boxes at stores like The Home Depot or Lowes.

Get by with a Little Help From Your Friends

If you want to complete your move without a moving company, consider enlisting family and friends. Not only are they great for helping the day of your move, but they can also pet sit. That way, you don’t have to spend money on boarding.

And depending on your moving schedule, you may also need a place to stay. Spending a few nights with loved ones will save you money on a hotel room and meals. Just don’t forget to say thank you!

Research Moving Company Rates

It’s essential to do your homework if you plan to use a moving company. Cheaper doesn’t always mean better, so check a company’s reviews and compare their rates to their timeliness. A less expensive moving company won’t save you any money if they’re slow-going.

Avoid peak moving months, which are usually May through August, if you want to find more cost-effective moving rates. Ask your moving company if they have different rates during the week versus the weekend as well.

Some movers offer a fixed total instead of hourly rates if you’re moving locally. Don’t forget to check for extra fees like fuel costs, packing materials and long carry expenses.
